Instant Replay Techbology used in Rugby
Instant replay technology is a complex computer system currently being used in a number of sports, including athletics, horse-racing, football, Australian rules football, cricket, tennis, Gaelic football, badminton, hurling and association football, to visually track the trajectory of the ball and display a replayed video of the play. Although the Instant replay technology is commonly used in many sports one of the main sports it is used in is Rugby Union.
Rugby Union
The use of video referee or instant replay was introduced to rugby Union in 2001. The laws of the game allow for, an official who uses technological devices, to be consulted by the referee in decisions relating to scoring a try or a kick at goal. The decision to call on the video referee is made by the referee, then the call is made by the replay referee, who takes their place in the stand of the host team. They either tell the pitch referee by radio or by the use of a big screen during televised matches. Unlike in the NFL, a coach cannot challenge a call made by the pitch referee. These instant replay cameras create a more accurate decision as you are able to slow down the replay and even pause it. This means it is easier for the referee to make a decision and it also means that the spectators can watch what happened again in case they missed it. Instant replay also allows for viewers watching TV to see a better perspective of the game because they are not present live at the game.
